My Research Question is how can modernization coexist with History preservations.

United States. National Park Service. (2012). “ African Burial Ground : African Burial Ground National Monument, New York” [Washington, D.C.] : National Park Service, [2012]  African Burial Ground : African Burial Ground National Monument, New York | Library of Congress (loc.gov)

In this article it describes the lives of African American slaves that lived in New York during the colonial times and how the African burial ground came to be.

The National Park service highlights the historical significance of this monument by the history tied to it, by informing the reader how African slaves created the tradition of burying their loved ones and creating their own cemetery, which is a clear value of history preservation

I will use the details of the African slaves living conditions and treatment by the colonizers to explain in more depth of why the creation of the burial ground was so important

Joanna Grabski, and Carol Magee. 2013. “African Art, Interviews, Narratives: Bodies of knowledge at work” Indiana University Press, May 28 2013 ProQuest Ebook Central – Reader

Joanna illustrates the time where the Burial ground was refounded in 1991 by the GSA which means the U.S General Services Adminstrations. The GSA were constructing on top of the burial ground and by the time they dug deep enough they discovered it but paid no mind to it and kept working on constructions.

Joanna reveals this information to show us that the GSA priorities were still on finishing their project and no regard for the relic they have found that had so much historical importance.

I will use their specific details and events pro black activists had to take to try and preserve this national monument before it would be destroyed for modernism.

Besty, Cully. 2018. “Lenape Native: The history and culture of New York’s first people” New York Nature, November 12 2018. Lenape Native | History and Heritage of the Lenape People in New York

Belly introduces the inhabitants of new york in precolonial times which were the lenape people which she expresses what parts of manhattan they were living in and what kind of culture they had.

Belly gives us an imagine of how new york was before colonization and then gives us an insight of what occurred of when they did invade the Lenapian territory

I will use Bellys gatherings to display how new york was like pre colonial times and how the Lenape people were enslaved by the dutch and how their own land was stolen by the colonizers and how they started bringing African slaves into their new land

Andrea E. Frohne. The African Burial Ground in New York City : Memory, Spirituality, and Space. Vol. First edition. New York State Series. Syracuse, New York: Syracuse University Press, 2015. https://search-ebscohost-com.ccny-proxy1.libr.ccny.cuny.edu/login.aspx?direct=true&db=e000xna&AN=986565&site=ehost-live.

Andrea writes and studies of the before and after the Burial ground was discovered and what kind of changes it made to the city and how it affected civilians. The book also generally includes the history of the site in precolonial times, when New york was colonized, the creation of the burial and ground and also the significance of it to African American slaves

She creates a timeline of the events that occurred prior, during, and after the discovery that led to the creation of the national monument. The Book itself is a chronological order of all the events that relate to the burial ground.

I will use This book to provide more details of every important era/ year that has to do with the site and also share the events that led to the monument opening its doors to the public

Bush, G. W. (2006). Proclamation 7984–Establishment of the African Burial Ground National Monument. In Weekly Compilation of Presidential Documents, March 06, 2006 (Vol. 42, Number 9, pp. 356-). U.S. Government Printing Office. Proclamation 7984–Establishment of the African Burial Ground National Monu…: EBSCOhost

President George Bush responds to the discovery of the African Burial Ground and since he has influence over the GSA ( U.S General Service Administration) since he was president at the time he was confronted with the decision to preserve this monument based on the “Antiquities Act”  which was to allow historic preservation.

George Bushtakes the decision to [reserve the monument but he gives them a small amount of space for it which he thought was needed and necessary for it to have a start.

I will investigate more on this article with more news perspectives and will be able to use this information to show how the site was approved and what inspired it to be preserved
